Basanta Chaudhary

Research Lab Assistant

Basanta Kumar Chaudhary is an alumnus of the Research Institute for Bioscience and Biotechnology (RIBB), where he served as a Research and Lab Assistant from 2022 to 2024. He completed his BSc. in Biotechnology from Kantipur Valley College, Nepal. His undergraduate thesis focused on evaluating cheese whey as a growth medium for Chlorella sp. and its influence on the growth and beta-galactosidase activity of Lactobacillus sp. a study that was recognized with an award at the Fourth International Conference on Bioscience and Biotechnology (ICBB 2022), Sauraha, Nepal.
This early research sparked Basanta's interest in the intersection of microbiology and biotechnology, which he deepened during his tenure at RIBB. At the institute, he was involved in a TWAS-funded project investigating beta-galactosidase and galacto-oligosaccharides production from cheese whey using lactic acid bacteria isolated from livestock milk. Under the guidance of Dr. Shyam Suwal and Mr. Prajwal Rajbhandari, he honed a wide range of laboratory skills, including SDS-PAGE, PCR, protein purification, DNA extraction, primer design, and antimicrobial assays.
Basanta later pursued an MSc. in Bioinformatics at the University of West London, UK, where he conducted a research project on comparative next-generation sequencing (NGS) analysis and machine learning approaches for differential gene expression in diseased and normal brain cells. His project, supervised by Prof. Shanyu Tang, aimed at identifying biomarkers relevant to glioblastoma, dementia, and other brain disorders.
His research interests include cancer bioinformatics, clinical and personalized genomics, precision medicine, and the application of computational tools to biological data. With a strong foundation in both wet-lab and in-silico techniques, Basanta is passionate about contributing to translational research and drug development.
