1) Workshop on Dairy Waste Management

Program Overview:
The workshop was divided into two sessions; Opening session and Technical session, and it was attended by fifty four guests from different sectors including dairy stake holders, dairy science experts, professors, environmentalists, environment consultancies, dairy associations, government officials, students and aspiring researchers. The program was chaired by Mr. Prajwal Rajbhandari, Vice President of RIBB; Chief Guest of the honor was Er. Ganesh Shah, Ex-Minister, Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment. Key note speaker of the program was Prof. Jagat Bahadur K.C, Ex-Vice Chancellor, Purbanchal University.
Dr. Heramba Rajbhandari, Executive Head, Nepal Dairy Pvt. Ltd. briefed information about the dairy industry of Nepal and its historic background. He highlighted the fact that the quality of dairy product depends not only on the milk processing but also on the local processing by farmers along with transportation and other processing methods applied.
Mr. Sanjiv Parajuli, Research Associate, RIBB who was one of two presenters during the technical session presented on management of liquid wastes from dairy industries with a major focus on cheese whey. Utilization of whey for bioconversion into ethanol using yeast
strains was widely appreciated by the guests.
Mr. Niranjan Shrestha, Chief Executive Officer, Environmental Services Nepal, who was one of two presenters during the technical session focused on production of bio-fertilizers from dairy industries’ sludge. He also emphasized on the management system that can be used to treat wastewater that is produced from the dairy industries in Nepal. Minute of the workshop:
- Dairy industries should have inbuilt waste treatment plant.
- Cleaning in Place (CIP) waste, production waste and whey should be segregated and collected in three different tanks and treated separately.
- Government policy makers should emphasize on providing incentives, tax reduction on equipments purchased for dairy waste management.
- Farmers should be made aware of hazards of dairy wastes and should be trained well enough such that they release dairy wastes in eco friendly manner.
- Dairy industries should be encouraged and provided with platforms and tools to convert dairy wastes into beneficial products like whey drinks, whey protein and others.
- For research on waste to energy conversion, collaboration between universities, research institutions and industries should take place.
2) Local Dairy Farmers Training I

3) Local Dairy Farmers Training II
Venue: Yak Cheese Factory, Chandanbari, Rasuwa, Altitude: 3250m
Date: August 28, 2013
Personnel involved: Prajwal Rajbhandari, Satish Adhikari, Sagar Atri as well as officials from yak Cheese factory and 12 local farmers
